Fundraising and friend-raising: Four reasons that newsletters are a great tool for NPOs

Adam Walker

"Time, talent and treasure." When I spent a decade producing an alumni magazine, my goal was to keep increasing the amount of time the alumni spent reading my publication because studies had shown that the more time a reader spent with the magazine, the more of their "time, talent and treasure" they would share with the organization.

Newsletters, like that alumni magazine, are an excellent way for not-for-profit organizations (NPOs) to connect with their supporters, deepening relationships (friend-raising) and securing financial support (fundraising).

Here are four ways newsletters do just that.

1) Newsletters help build and maintain relationships with supporters. Organizations can demonstrate their commitment to transparency and accountability by providing regular updates. This is critical to fostering trust and credibility with donors. Profiling donors and highlighting their contributions are also crucial for strengthening the relationship between the organization and its audience.

2) Newsletters are a vital channel for sharing information about an organization's impact. By showcasing success stories, statistics, and testimonials, organizations can help supporters understand the importance and impact of their work. This can be particularly effective when coupled with a clear call to action, such as a request for donations (treasure) or volunteer support (time and talent).

3) Newsletters regularly appearing in their inboxes help keep an organization top-of-mind with supporters. Regular updates serve as a reminder of the organization's vital work, which can keep supporters engaged and interested in supporting the organization over the long term.

4) Newsletters can be an effective fundraising tool in themselves. An organization can encourage supporters to make a gift to support its mission by including a clear call to action and a donation link. Newsletters can also be used to promote fundraising campaigns, events, or other initiatives, which can generate additional support.

So, whether you are after your audiences' time, their talent, or their treasure, newsletters are a great way to raise friends and funds!

Getting the boss' voice right: How to craft effective executive messaging

Over the years, I have written messaging for many senior executives and leaders. I have written for the president of a Norwegian Aquaculture company, the sales director of food distribution businesses, the vice president of human resources in a mining company, the Dean of a university faculty, and many others. What are the keys to capturing the strategic content and the person's voice? Time, curiosity, and empathy.
